The Death of Death
Introduction
“For if by the transgression of the one death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17)
There’s an old joke that gets tossed around in the Spring of each year that says, ‘there are only two sure things in life: death and taxes.’ But death is no joke. For most people, death is their greatest fear. The Bible calls it the enemy. Death stings. Every time you drive by a cemetery or get news of a funeral, you’re reminded that one out of one people die. It’s clear that death is reigning. As a consequence of sin, death is king.
Enter Jesus. Romans 5 tells us that though death is reigning, those who receive the grace and righteousness of Jesus will reign, not in death, but in life. Jesus puts to death the reign of death, victoriously overcoming its rule and providing an abundance of life.
This year’s theme for Faith Bible Church’s Easter Celebration is “The Death of Death”. For the fourth year in a row, our church staff is seeking to bless our body with a 6-week Easter devotional. This year’s daily readings will trace the Bible’s teaching on the effects of sin, spiritual rebirth, and our ultimate victory over death through the work of Jesus Christ.
Instead of printing a booklet, the readings for each week will be made available every Monday morning through email and our social media accounts, or by accessing a QR code in each week’s church bulletin. There will be 6 readings each week—one for each day, with the exception of Sunday.
Over the next 6 weeks, as we read the same Scriptures, ponder the same questions, and pray the same prayers we are hoping a deeper unity in our church will be cultivated. We hope your families and ABFs can use these readings to spark discussion and encouragement. You can’t talk about Easter without talking about death, but the triumph of Easter is that Jesus overcame the reign of death through the power of His resurrection. Death has lost its sting.
